Following a recent building collapse largely attributed to a telecommunication infrastructure mounted on it, the Lagos state government through its Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) has said all is set to commence inspection of telecom sites in the state. Addressing newsmen in Ikeja, the General Manager of the agency, Mr. Babajide Odekunle said the exercise is geared towards ensuring orderly development in the construction and operations of telecommunications infrastructure deployed by Mobile Network operators and other allied companies in Lagos state. He added that the exercise will enable the agency to develop a comprehensive database of telecommunications cell sites, including towers and other appurtenances to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of its oversight functions. According to him, the exercise is in line with the statutory functions of LASIMRA, as enshrined in its establishment Law of 2004 which includes the protection of public health and safety of the environment through enforcement of regulatory standards. “By the virtue of section 21(3) of the LASIMRA Establishment Law, operators and owners of properties containing Telecommunications cell sites, BTS towers, masts and roof mounted Telecommunications antennas will be required by Law to provide LASIMRA’s representatives with unhindered access to the infrastructure sites throughout the duration of the exercise,” the General Manager noted. He, however, appealed to the general public, particularly operators and owners of properties having telecommunication infrastructure such as Base Transceiver Station Masts and Towers on them, to cooperate with the agency. TheNewsGuru reports the agency will embark on the statewide inspection and standards compliance audit between September 1 and December 31, 2017. Odekunle said the exercise will be carried out by duly certified site inspection representatives of LASIMRA between the hours of 8.00 am and 5.00 pm daily from Mondays to Saturdays.
