ABUJA- Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Nigeria, Assem Mohammed Hanafi, has said that Egypt and Nigeria will continue to stand together in the war against terrorism, adding that the two countries shall ultimately prevail against the evil of terrorism. A bomb explosion ripped through the mosque before gunmen opened fire on the worshippers gathered for weekly Friday prayers, officials said. / AFP PHOTO Hanafi declared this in a series of tweets at the weekend following the coordinated terror attacks that killed 305 innocent victims and injured many others in the Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abed, west of El Arish, the main city in North Sinai on Friday, which is the deadliest terror attack in Egypt in recent times. The envoy recalled that Sinai attack was similar to the sad explosion in Kano in northwest Nigeria in which terrorists exploded bomb in a mosque and shot those trying to escape from the blast outside in 2014, and the recent attack in Mubi, Adamawa state northeast Nigeria, which collectively killed over 500 Nigerians. “Egypt and Nigeria will stand together against the evil acts of terrorism and we shall ultimately prevail,” Hanafi said, adding that both countries must stand in solidarity. In his show of solidarity, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, had sent condolences to the government and people of Egypt over the heartless attacks on the Sinai mosque in which he condemned the dastardly act on innocent worshippers. The President reiterated that the workable panacea to such mindless and irresponsible attacks on citizens would be a global joint action that continually shares intelligence.Egyptian state media reported that terrorists killed more than 305 people at a mosque in North Sinai, detonating a bomb and gunning down worshipers as they tried to escape in the deadliest of such attacks in Egypt’s modern history.Worshipers were finishing Friday prayers at the mosque when a bomb exploded, witnesses said. Around 40 terrorists set up positions outside the mosque with jeeps and opened fire from different directions as people tried to escape, the report said.No group immediately claimed responsibility, but the attacks have the trappings of the Islamic State and their affiliates in the mainly desert region.
